BIO:  Sammie was dumped at a shelter in North Carolina with seven other dogs.  That hasn’t influenced how cute, sweet, and loving this little boy is.  He has been in his foster home for 5 days and has become great friends with his dachshund foster brother.  He has been exposed to large dogs and doesn’t seem to like them very much.  He does not have a problem with cats.  Sammie must go to a home with a fenced yard so that he can run around. If he is in an area that is not fenced, he MUST be on a leash hooked to a harness.  He has the capability to slip a collar, no matter how tight it is.  Therefore, a harness is also a MUST.

He loves to run around playing with squeaker toys and he does know how to play fetch.  We feel like somewhere in his past, someone actually spent some time with him and taught him fetch and with a “drop” command, he drops the toy with the expectation that he’s going to chase it again.  He loves belly rubs and laying next to you on the couch after a long day playing and running around.  So far, we’ve only experienced two problems:  1) He does have a slight food aggression.  We have easily taken care of this by simply feeding him away from other dogs.  2)  He is doggie door trained, but if it is dark and cold outside (early morning/evening), he may potty in the house before going outside.  We are working with him on this by keeping a watchful eye on him when he wanders off during these times.

If you adopt Sammie, you will be so happy with him and he will give you unconditional love!  He gives puppy kisses and snuggles as good, if not better, than any dog you could ever want.  If you have any questions about Sammie, please contact us at the foster’s email address.  We’d love to tell you all about him.  Sammie would love to have a Furever Home for the holidays!

Good with Some Dogs (No large dogs), Good with Cats, Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
