BIO:  DJ’s story before he came to us is not a happy one.  He came from Alabama where his owner kept him in a crate in the basement almost 24/7 after going through a divorce.  NO dog or animal should have to live that way.  Thankfully, the ex-husband, when he found out about it, reached out to us and we agreed to take him and another dog out of that situation.

DJ’s story doesn’t end there.  We have discovered that he has been abused and it was likely by the adult son.  If you pick DJ up and put your hand over his head he flinches.  You have to go slow with him and then he’ll be fine.

All things considered, DJ is a wonderful dog and enjoys life outside of a crate!  He is doing fine with house-breaking but the foster mom has a doggie door.  We are sure that with a schedule, he’ll be just fine.

Because DJ spent all that time in a crate, we promised him NO MORE CRATES!  Gating him in a room or free reign is fine, but no crates and no keeping him outside.

NO CATS, he will kill them!  Unfortunately, the owners didn’t take good care of DJ’s teeth so he did lose quite a few teeth but his mouth is healing and he’ll be able to eat hard dog food when his mouth is healed.

Our primary wish for DJ is someone that is home a lot or a retired person willing to give DJ some happiness for the rest of his life.  We would also like for him to have another dog to be his buddy and a fenced yard.  Please consider giving DJ a forever home where he’ll no longer know abuse!

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
