BIO:  Oliver is blind, but don’t tell him that!  He learns the house and yard in no time and if you have a doggie door, he’ll learn how to use that too.  He knows how to use the ramp going down the stairs to the back yard and will sleep in a crate at night or if you have to leave home for a while.  But, no way will we let him go to a home where he’ll be crated for the time you’re at work and at night.

Oliver is all puppy and needs a young dog to play with so he doesn’t get bored and start chewing on stuff.  Also, because he is blind, he MUST have a fenced yard... no apartments or unfenced yards for this boy.  What Oliver really likes is for you to go out with him.  After a few minutes, he’ll do his business.  The temporary foster mom had a doggie door and he loved to follow the other dogs out the doggie door and into the yard.

Oliver was going to be taken to the animal shelter in Tennessee but lucky for him the vet clinic had an employee there that contacted us.  We said right away we’d take him and the employee called the family back from their way to animal control.

Having a blind dachshund is not hard but it does require someone committed to living with a blind dachshund and some patience when they get under foot.  They can’t see to know they are.

If you are interested in adopting Oliver, please fill out an application.  This is probably one of the sweetest boys we’ve ever had!  Be prepared to have your faced washed with kisses each time you pick him up!

Good with Dogs, Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
