BIO:  Mercedes is a mini dachshund mix who was born in October 2014 and spent her first two years in an unstable home.  At 23 months old, she was adopted by a couple who had two older cats.  They worked tirelessly for a year to socialize Mercedes as she was terrified of people, noises, and movement when she came to live with them.  Now nearly three years old, Mercedes has come a long way.  She is much calmer, healthier, and in excellent physical shape (a muscular 7 pounds).  She is crate trained, house trained, and leash trained.  Mercedes readily goes into her crate at night, burrows in, and is quiet until morning.  Her people have closely followed Cesar Milan’s techniques for managing a dog with “issues”.  However, she is still very aggressive toward the two cats, and that is the primary reason the couple is surrendering her.

Mercedes would do well in a home with other dogs (NO CATS) and possibly children, although her people have not exposed her to kids.  She is affectionate, loves to curl up on your lap and is extremely loyal to her human “pack”.  She would do best in a situation where she gets lots of exercise (including vigorous leashed walks with her human pack leader), contact with other dogs, and consistent structure.

She will be bringing her bed, crate, blankets, toys and clothes with her to her new forever home.

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
