Gage is a beautiful 6-year old boy with long, silky red hair and a noble face. We think he was a puppy mill dog and spent most of his life in a cage, but he is adjusting well to life in the house. After a few weeks at his foster home, Gage has more spring in his step and light in his eyes. He loves to play and nap with the other dachshund in the house and gets along well with the big dog, eating politely side-by-side with both of them. He walks well on a leash and is a good traveler in the car. He likes to cuddle with his foster mom and adores sleeping in the big bed, but he does fine in his own bed too. Gage does best with housebreaking when he is taken out on a regular schedule and is improving all the time. He knows how to use the doggie door, although he needs some encouragement when it comes to going out in the rain. Gage would thrive in a house where the people move and speak a little on the quiet side. He has some fear issues, and has lashed out if treated with too much dominance, but he is responding to positive reinforcement and gentle encouragement. Gage is neutered, UTD on shots and is on heartworm preventative. If you have room in your heart for this little guy and have the time and patience to nurture his spirit, he’ll love you forever. We think Gage would do better in a women only household as he has shown some fear of men. Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
