UPDATE: 8/14/2016
Rafe was found as a stray in Alabama. He was picked up by a shelter who then referred him to AADR. He was extremely malnourished and even now, a month later, is still a little underweight. He may have been abused at one point because he cowers sometimes. But whatever happened to him did not change is sweet personally.
He is totally potty trained - not a single accident. He was very well behaved getting his nails done at the groomer. Everyone there liked him. He heels on a leash very nicely. He's not bothered by cats, chickens or horses. He's much less stiff now that he isn't so malnourished and is taking the supplements. He is actually running around outside now. He sleeps well in a bed on the floor of our bedroom without the need of a crate. He's good about going into his large cage when we are gone. He likes cuddling with blankets.
If you want a super sweet cuddle bug, here is your man! Rafe gets along with every person and dog he meets. He loves wandering around in our fenced yard. He is an extreme cuddler and curls up into a tiny ball next to you. He will follow you anywhere! He is malnourished so he loves to eat. He needs to gain about 3 pounds. Because his teeth were neglected and he lost some, he likes his food softened a little with water and soft food, but he will eat hard food.
He eats very fast, so he would benefit from one of those slow-feed bowls, or have his meal broken down into parts. His hips are a little stiff so we started giving him joint supplements, but he gets around fine. He isn't afraid of loud noises. He has some cataracts but he still sees well. He is crate trained. And, he likes riding in the car. Please consider this super senior!

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
