Hi! My name is Shay and I am a 1 1/2 year old black and tan mini dachshund. I weight 8 pounds but I do need to gain a few pounds. I was pulled from a shelter by my foster mom after the animal control officer told her that I was there. Because I was an owner surrender, I would be first to be euthanized. The shelter told her that I didn't have much time at all due to overcrowding. The shelter never could get the story straight on why I was turned in. My owner told the shelter that I had puppies once and now I was going to go back into heat and she didn't want puppies again. When they told her where she could go to get a low cost spay/neuter, she then told them that I ran away from her. They offered her a free leash and collar. She refused it and then said, "I paid good money for this dog and she is bigger than she was supposed to be so I put in her in the yard." That is where I pretty much lived until I went to the shelter. My foster mom says that I seem to be doing really well with going potty outside and I sleep in my crate. She says that my former owner must have fed me table scraps because that is what I try to eat. I don't understand the dog food that I am being given now but I will get used to it. My mom also took care of getting me something she calls spayed. She says it means that I can't have any more puppies which is fine by me because I am just a puppy myself. I am extremely playful with my foster brothers and sisters and would love to have a great home with a family that won't make excuses for giving me up. Can I come home with you?
Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.
More about SHAY....LA
Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
