BIO UPDATE (8/15/2016):

Philomena has been in foster care for 8 months and is really ready to find her forever home! She is still learning that she can trust people and really loves her foster dad, but with some time, patience and love, she'll overcome this.   She is working on her leash training and waking, and doing well. She is doing well in her potty habits as long as she is kept on a schedule. She warms up slowly, but once she knows she's safe, she'll be your little shadow.   She really would like a fully fenced in yard as she like to run around and play.

She gets along well with other dogs, but we're not sure about cats. As she is a bit shy she should go to a home without children. She still has an issue with her dry eye and requires a simple twice daily ointment.

BIO: Philomena (Philly is her nickname) came into rescue after her owner passed away and the spouse did not want her.  We believe that she was puppy mill dog who was adopted to this couple several years ago.  She is not your typical doxie as is very skittish especially with people other than the male that she attaches herself to.  At our home she has attached to Foster Dad.  She does not really like to cuddle and will sit by herself.  We do Cuddle Therapy with her nightly to gradually let her know she is safe... she loves having her neck rubbed!  When she first came to our home, she was very scared and it took several weeks for her to come out of her shell. She has since started to play with toys and responds to her name.  She is working on housetraining and is kept on a strict potty schedule here.  She loves treats and will come to take it from your hand.  She is crate trained and does stay in all night.  She will bark at meal time when she knows you are getting it ready, other than that she doesn’t make a sound. She loves the other dogs and respects their space.

With all that being stated, she will need to go to a home that is Dachshund-wise and willing to continue her process to becoming a pet.  We advise no children as she may not be able to tolerate that much activity and may nip.  She needs her space while she is learning to be a dog again so patience and love are what she will need.  She requires eye ointment 2x a day as she has dry eye in her right eye.  Other than that, she is very healthy and has a beautiful coat.

If you are willing to take her on and help her learn to trust and love, please let us know. Not sure what happened to her in her years before coming to us, but we need to make sure she has love and kindness for now on—once she is completely out of her shell she will be a beauty, inside and out!

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
