APR. 2016:

Life is GOOD!!!!  I’m still loving it here in FL.  No more damp dreary basements for me!  I LOVE going outside to see if I can catch a gecko ... or just bask in the sun ... yahoo!  I now ask to go outside and bark when I’m ready to come back in ... I’m sooo smart!

My fur is growing back in small patches ... some red ... some black ... some silver.  I look more handsome every day!  I am still the happy-go-lucky dude who wants to be sitting with you whenever you want a companion, but I am perfectly fine if you need to go to work or do errands.  I am housebroken and can hold “it” for hours!

I am a lover ... and have started giving my foster mom kisses.  It took me awhile to trust her since I was used to people not being so nice to me.  I have started playing with toys and have been seen teasing my foster sibs to play, too.  Thank you AADR for opening up a whole new world to me!

Are you looking for your next BEST friend?  Here I am , just waiting for you!!!

FEB. 2016:
HANDSOME, happy, tail wagging dude in search of a compassionate, kind, and loving family.  Hi there .... my name is Abbott, but possibly my name should be Lucky because I sure have been LUCKY lately!  I don't know for how long (maybe years), I lived in a crate with a blanket tossed over it, in a miserable dark damp basement.  Thankfully, a good Samaritan convinced my owner to surrender me and then contacted AADR to rescue me.

The wonderful volunteers at AADR immediately took me to the vet since I was really a mess!  All but four of my teeth were rotten and had to be pulled.   I was heartworm positive and AADR had me treated to get rid of those monsters growing inside me.  Then the vet addressed my skin and coat.  Sadly, I was nearly naked when I arrived in TN ... brrr!  Thanks to antibiotics, steroids, anti-fungal meds, a high quality Rx diet, lots of oil supplements, and medicated shampoo, I am growing fur again ... yahoo!  Boy oh boy, did I mention that I'm really HANDSOME?!? I'm a redhead (or at least my head is red) but much of my new coat is coming in with a lot of black and some cool silver dappling. The ladies are going to love that "distinguished gray" look, don't cha' know!

So after two months in TN and making huge strides, AADR decided I should go soak up some sun in FL.  Told you I was LUCKY! Wearing my awesome flannel pj's and tucked into a cozy warm cuddle sack, thirteen terrific volunteer drivers got me to my FL foster home ... although some didn't want to hand me off to the next driver because I was so lovable!  Once in FL, I immediately fit in with my foster sibs and learned the household routine pronto ... foster mom says I'm the smartest foster she's had in two years!

FL is so different from my past life in a basement.  Did you know they don't even have basements in FL??? Well, what they do have is lots of sun and this green pointy stuff in the yard.  It's called grass, but it tickles my paws so I'm still getting used to walking on it.  I go out there to do my business since I totally understand that's my job (and I get treats), and I'm quite happy "holding it" for hours so I don't have to tickle my feet!  BTW, my foster mom has a raised canvas platform in the yard where I can sunbathe to my heart's content in the fenced yard .... HEAVEN!

I like walking on a leash and meeting the neighbors and other dogs.  Everyone loves how happy I am ... and, oh, how HANDSOME, too!  When I first came to FL, I would put myself to bed in a crate in foster mom's bedroom.  But, it only took me 3 nights to ask to get up on this high, fluffy, soft place called the BIG bed.  WOW, now that place rocks! No wonder the other dogs ask to be up there every night. Now I rush to be picked up first ... told you I was smart!  I could sleep there FOREVER!

I also LOVE sitting on your lap and having my head scratched, or sitting beside you on the sofa.  I'll keep nudging your hand to pat me 'cause that feels soooo good!  Yes, I am very happy with my new foster life in FL, but I would REALLY like a forever home of my own.  I am getting healthier by the day and my fur is slowly growing back.  We're not sure if it will all grow back on my belly and chest, but, trust me, I'm still very HANDSOME!  So if you live in FL and want a tail wagging, always happy, never grouchy, "hunk, a hunk of burning love" .... I'm here .... waiting for YOU!

If I sound like the guy of your dreams, please fill out an application at www.allamericandachshundrescue.org and email my foster mom at meg1709@comcast.net  We look forward to hearing from you!

More about Abbott....SC

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
