BIO:

Chico came from a family that gave him up when his elderly person passed away and none of the family wanted him. He was overweight when he came to us at 28.4 lbs and now that we have him on a very strict diet, he’s down to about 20-21 lbs. He's doing very well but at first all he wanted to eat was people food and he would cry and beg for it. As he’s lost weight, he’s become more active which has helped him lose even more weight. He gets along with all dogs and likes to play but having been an only dog for over 2 yrs he’d be fine as an only dog but has to go to a family that is active and can help him keep his weight off. We had to shave his hair all the way down because while in the elderly person's home he was never groomed and he became matted. His fur is baby-fine so it’s very important to keep him brushed. When we shaved him down we did find what looks to be a chemical burn on his neck that probably happened when someone used the cheap flea and tick topical on him. Once his fur all grows back you’ll not see it. But this is a caution that only the topical from the vet is advised; we use Trifexis for heartworm and tick prevention.

Chico really wants to be loved, he likes to be in your lap when you have down-time and will follow you from room to room.  He sleeps in a doggie bed at night and can be crated for up to 4-6 hours (any more than that is stretching it for him but can be done if working, up to 8 hours but no more than that). Chico is a nervous dog and we feel was not really treated well by the elderly person that had him because at first he was very hand shy and gets nervous when you mess with his neck or collar.

We think a fenced-in yard would be best for Chico so he can run and play in the yard with or without another dog.

With all this being stated, Chico is a wonderful dog and deserves kindness and understanding as he continues to learn to be a cherished member of the family and he becomes more sure of himself. He’s a work in progress but he’ll be a beautiful dog when he finally gets there. If you’re looking for a challenge then Chico might be the dog for you, that way you can say you truly did rescue him. Contact his foster mom for more details, but you can’t go wrong with this boy.

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
