Update, 1-09-15:

Hello everyone.  I would like to report on some new updates that my foster dad has told me I should share with you all.  I have made some huge improvements on my weight.  I am down to a sleek 14 lbs.  I am no longer on my prescription weight loss formula diet and am on a very structured diet of regular dog food.  It tastes much better than my weight loss food.  I absolutely love to give kisses.  He says it is to extreme sometimes as I will get on your chest and just lick and lick and lick your face.   You will have to push me away, but I will still want to come back for more.  I love those that love me.  I get along with other dogs that are my size or smaller very well, but unfortunately I do not care to be around bigger dogs.  Small children scare me too.  They are just too fast for me and I tend to bark and growl to slow them down.  So if you have big dogs or children under the age of 10, I might not be the best fit for your family.  Additionally, I LOVE squeaky toys and those antlers that can be bought at pet stores.  I will chew and chew on them until I get that squeaker out and shake them around until all the stuffing is all over the place.  It is so fun to play with them and chew on them.  I have a very special harness that I love to take walks with.  I am not a huge fan of car rides, but get through them pretty well if I can see out a window occasionally and I don’t get car sick.  I am really looking forward to finding my new Fur-Ever home and be adopted into a loving family.  You will not be disappointed with me…my foster dad says I am a “Very Good Boy”!  -- Bear

We have had the pleasure of having Bear in our home for about a week now and he is proving to be a wonderful big boy.  Don’t let his size intimidate you; every ounce that he weighs is an ounce of love and affection.  Right from the minute we got him he has been so loving and playful.  He absolutely adores having his belly rubbed and will affectionately pay you back with more kisses than you can handle (seriously, you will have to push him away because he will absolutely smother you in kisses). 

He has a lot of fun running around the house playing with his foster brother.  He is still a little heavy, but he is losing weight very well, and it won‘t be long and he will be to his perfect weight.  He is getting better on a leash, but he does still pull a little on the first half of his walks, but as the walk gets longer, the pulling gets less.  When he first got here, he had one accident in the house.  Since learning how to use the dog door, there have not been any other issues.  He does sleep in a kennel at night.  The first few minutes he will whine and bark a few times.  A simple stern NO and he will stop and sleep the rest of the night.  His biggest shortcoming is he has a tendency of barking at the smallest noises.  I think he’s learning and getting better, but he will still bark at the dishwasher or washing machine as cycles change or small noises that he is not sure where they are coming from. 

Although we have not exposed him to small children or cats yet, I believe that he would fit in well and adapt to any family dynamic.  He is a wonderful “Teddy Bear” of a dog, so his name fits him well not only in size, but in personality.

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
