UPDATE 08-26-14:  Sammy has been with our local trainer now for 3 weeks and making great strides. When he first arrived at the trainer’s house he was very scared & would not let her touch him. She let him settle in the first day with as much crate time as he needed and did not push him to come out. Once he finally came out of his crate on day 2, she slipped the slip leash on & headed out for potty time. Sammy did not react well to leash pressure (see 1st video). She didn’t give up though and gave him time to understand nothing was going to happen. In less than 5 minutes Sammy realized she wasn’t giving up on him and he started responding to light leash pressure in a positive way (see 2nd video).  Since he has been at the trainer’s home he has learned to walk FANTASTIC on a leash (see leash walking video). He goes on 2 structured walks a day and is a dream boat to walk! Sammy still has some, but very little submissive urination going on and it will just take time & patience for him to understand he his FINALLY safe in his new home. He knows how to enter his crate on his own with the “crate” command so that you will not have to make him nervous by hovering over him. He knows how to do the “down” command (he rolls onto his back with this command instead of the “typical” down). He knows “leave it”, “come”, “potty”, and “heel”.  He also knows “place” command. This is where Sammy is told to go to a certain spot & stay there until he is released. All of these are confident building exercises for Sammy & his new home MUST work with him every day on these so that he doesn’t go back into his shell. At the trainer’s house he has been around kids, cats, and other dogs. After a week he approached the children on his own and now is fine with them but because of the transition into a new home we feel it would be best if his forever home did not have any children. Sammy completely ignores the cats and plays with his dachshund buddy Freddie all the time. Sammy will need a home with only ONE other dog. If there are too many dogs in the home Sammy will become over-stimulated and will bark & charge aggressively (this has not been displayed while in the trainer’s home, but has been displayed in other homes).

Because Mr. Sammy comes with extra baggage than most we are waiving his adoption fee, BUT there are requirements in order to adopt him:

Must have ONE other dog (no more, no less)
Fenced in yard
No children
A local home is required
Doggie Door Preferred
A quiet household
Willing to continue training EVERYDAY
LOTS OF PATIENCE!

We are requiring a local adoption for Sammy because our trainer has agreed to work with his forever home so that Sammy is the best possible Sammy he can be!  If you fit the bill & would be interested in speaking with someone about Sammy please contact his foster home.

04-12-04: Sammy was dumped at a rural shelter in mid Alabama and he was scared to death. He finally would let a woman shelter volunteer handle him but they knew he wouldn’t stand a chance in the shelter so they asked if we’d take him and we did. At first he was very scared, more changes, but when he discovered that no one was going to harm him he relaxed and then started to attach himself to his foster mom. He’s not crazy about foster dad but foster dad just ignores him and Sammy is fine with that.

Sammy really is a good boy and he tries so hard to please and he’ll be very submissive to his foster mom trying to please. He also submissive pees a little too but we are working on that. He is house broken if you keep him on a schedule and crate him when you leave.

Sammy REQUIRES a fenced in yard and ONE other dog to keep him company when the family has to leave. In time we believe he’ll know that he’s safe and won’t be as much of a challenge that he is now. When he’s in your lap he just wants to be as close to you as he can get. He’s a great watch dog too, little dog with a big bark.

Sammy won’t be an easy dog at first but what you’ll get in time is a dog that would lay down his life for you. He would be best with a single lady or a couple where the man understands it’ll take time and patience to get Sammy to trust you…are you up to the challenge?

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
