HI! My name is Addie. I am a small dachshund, weighing 8 lbs. My coat is a red dapple and my eyes are amber colored and each eye has a blue fleck, reinforcing the dapple. I am not used to the cold up here in Vermont so I had to stay in the house for a whole week while the temperature was below 0°. My foster Mom put down pee pads for me to use and she was happy to see that I knew what they were for. I know I need to learn to go outside on a regular basis, but I have to wait for a little warmer weather. I am currently living with 7 other dogs – three other rescued dachshunds (two boys and one other girl); two West Highland White Terrier girls; and guest dogs Finn (an Australian Shepard mix) and Tala (a Whippet). I get along with them all. I will bark when I hear a strange sound, but I quiet down when I hear my foster Mom’s voice reassuring me that all is okay. Right now I am sleeping in a large pen with my foster sister, but I would absolutely love to sleep with you in your big bed and snuggle with you all night.

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
