BIO

Ziggy is an extremely good dog.  He highly enjoys lying in your lap or beside you on the couch with his head on your lap.  Ziggy has one of the cutest character traits I have ever seen in a dog; at times he thinks he’s a cat.  When he’s given direct attention and petted, he will actually purr (a very subtle growl but it is very apparent it’s his way of letting you know that he’s enjoying it).  Occasionally, he will walk up the arm of our couch and sit on the back of it so that he can lie in the sun and look out the window.  He is very much an attention hound; he so desires being the center of it.  It is apparent that he has not had much experience with toys, as he is not really sure what to do with them and prefers to just ignore them.  With some work, I think he would really enjoy being a toss and fetch kind of dog.  He has a slightly male dominant personality, but has not appeared to be aggressive, only a slight growl, but when told to stop he listens well and hasn’t escalated any higher.  He is a very slow and meticulous eater (one piece at a time, chewed completely prior to swallowing).  He is very good at using pet stairs for getting on our couch, so that he isn’t jumping and taking the chances of hurting his back.  We are working with him to get completely house trained and reward him each time he comes inside with a treat.  He seems to enjoy them very much.  I feel that he would be a great pet for a family with children age 10 or higher.  He has A LOT of love to give, and rewards love – with love.

(We will provide further information as we learn more about his personality as it pertains to interacting with smaller children and other pets)

UPDATES TO COME AS WE GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
