BIO: Shane was rescued from a shelter after his owners surrendered him. He was turned in due to biting a child who picked him up improperly. He can go to a home with older children who have an understanding of proper handling of dogs. He was quite thin when he came to us but has filled out nicely. He is really a nice sweet dog, loves to sit with you & nudges your hand to be petted, will roll over so you can rub his tummy. He is housetrained & sleeps all night in his crate. He loves to take long walks (3 mile walks with his foster Dad). He gets along well with our 2 Doxies-knows his place in the pack, loves to play & zoom around the yard. He is very interested in our cat--will bark at her--we were able to control that with a few sprays from the water bottle & command of no kitty, I would suggest a home with no cats. He guards the yard from squirrels-what Doxie doesn't?? He is protective of the yard and will bark at strangers, is fine once he knows you are not a threat-again the water bottle squirt worked. He eats well-very protective of his bowl--we are doing behavior methods to teach him to relax during feeds--He loves attention but does not constantly demand it like many Doxies do. He will be a great companion for someone. He has an overbite, does not affect his ability to eat. He is up to date with his shots, he is neutered, microchipped. He is heartworm negative & on Interceptor monthly. We use advantage for flea control. He is currently eating Science Diet dry food.

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
