BIO:
Deano is a sweet older gentleman who was brought to a small rural animal shelter by his owner to be euthanized. When the shelter director met him, he saw past Deano's rotten teeth and missing hair and realized that there was still a lot of life left in him. He decided that Deano deserved a second chance andcalled a dachshund rescuer. With some TLC Deano is now a new dog. He had 27 bad teeth removed and the remaining ones are shiny and white. He has no trouble eating dry dog food and dog biscuits. It turns out Deano is allergic to chicken and corn, so the poor quality dog food and people food he had been fed irritated his skin and his hair fell out. After a few months of a good quality fish based dog food Deano's skin is healthy and his hair has grown back. To stay healthy he will have to remain on this type of diet.
Deano has a great personality. He gets along well with other dogs and frequently snuggles up beside them and even likes to play sometimes. He is well housebroken and will howl at the door when he needs to go out. He loves to be with his people and will watch from his dog bed and hop up and follow if you get out of his sight. Deano does fine alone during the day; he just snoozes in his bed by the window. At night he sleeps on a dog bed or on the big bed. True to his dachshund nature he must have a blanket to burrow under. He has not been around cats, but is mild natured and would probably be fine. He can be introduced to a cat if you need to know how he does. Dean walks well on a leash and enjoys strolls around the neighborhood. He is not shy or fearful and does well with both men and women. He has not been around children much, but would be fine with children who are old enough to understand that they must be gentle with him and that he will sometimes need his own space.
If you are looking for a gentle little friend to share walks and relaxation, Deano is your man.
More about Deano...FL
Good with Dogs, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
