BEING FOSTERED IN NY STATE

Sharky was surrendered to rescue because previous owner was not able to handle him. The owner claimed that Sparky was not trustworthy and could be aggressive with no warning and was too active. He was said to have had no boundaries and should not be trusted with children.
His foster mom is a trainer and she says Sharky is doing great. Please read her thoughts on Sharky. What I have seen based on 18 years of behavior and training: Sharky is a young pup and has no more energy then any other pup. In fact seems to be on the lower end of energy level. He LOVES playing with all of my other dogs. Especially the two other Doxies I have (one a foster). He has been with my 1 year old grandson everyday and has NEVER shown aggression or inappropriate behavior other than the occasional stealing of food out of his hand. We have handled him in every way possible and have seen no aggression. It took him two days to adjust to our home, he was quickly taught the ranks by my shep/border X dominate female, which he quickly respected. He does play rough with the other doxies sometimes but he is learning. His rough play is nothing of concern. He is a little reserved with strangers but will warm up quickly if given time to say Hi on his own. He is crate trained and working on his house training. He politely shares his food with our other foster Doxie. He is quickly redirected and corrected should he try to over step his boundaries and he responses perfectly. I would say he will do great in a home that will continue training and not baby him too much. With a consistent home he should continue to blossom. He is a love bug and loves sleeping on your lap and loves giving kisses. He should have a playmate and he should have consistent play time so his puppy energy can be expelled. He is not possessive of anything and is fine for grooming. He is a joy to have and did I mention he does great with my kitties? I feel that his previous owner may not have been consistent and may have over babied him, perhaps not giving him the proper direction. As a puppy it is important to mold future behavior and he has had a great start with us. He is a handsome boy and should make any family very happy.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
