Rufus had been SHOT!!! While doing an xray of Rufus' back because he limped sometimes it was discovered that there was a pellet laying next to his spinal cord.....He is heartworm free and ready for his forever home!!
Hi My name is Rufus and I am a 5 year old chocolate boy. I was pulled from a shelter in Picayune, Mississippi, where I was dumped along with three other dogs. My foster mom says that many breeders in this area dump dogs when we are not useful anymore. I was not adopted because I am heartworm positive. SSDR said that they would treat my heartworms and find a great home for me. I will be available for adoption as soon as I finish my heartworm treatment around June 30th.
I will tell you a little bit about myself. I was a former breeder dog and I wasn't treated too nicely. My foster mom is working on it but I submissively urinate when I am in fear that I will be beaten. She tells me that no one will ever hit me again but I am still trying to learn to trust her on that one. I am working on getting the hang of this housebreaking business and seem to be doing better with urine than feces but I do love living in a house and playing with my foster brother. He is a rottweiler but he is really nice to me. I weigh 12 pounds but I do need to gain a few pounds. I am good with kids but I could live in a home without cats. I like to chase them, bark at them, and corner them in the house. Out of State and Canidian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arranements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
