BIO:   Janie is a gentle, long haired chocolate and tan girl with an elegant air.  Her flowing hair wraps around her chest like a shawl.  It is a joy to watch her trot and run out in the sunlight.  She was apparently neglected, because she is very shy.  She has attached herself to our Mom who lives with us and is very protective of her. She does not trust other members of the pack at mealtime and so we must feed her before the rest so that she can eat in peace.  She has a beautiful, soulful face and deep chocolate colored eyes that match her coat.  All in all, a real potential beauty once she has learned to trust her surroundings and the fact that people care.  She may do alright with another dog or two but a large pack may slow down the process of gaining trust.  It is hard to tell if she would be ok with children since she shies away from almost everyone. She is improving each day.  She would make a great companion for someone who understands patience and gentleness.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
