If you’re looking for a sweet, laid-back, handsome dachshund, Bernie is your guy! He gets along with everybody, including his foster brothers and sisters, and has a happy-go-lucky attitude about life! He enjoys being outside playing in the yard, getting a suntan, chasing birds, and walks great on a leash. Bernie is fantastic in the car and would be a super travel companion. He also gets along well with children and would do well as a family pet and a companion for another dog. He is crate trained and sleeps quietly at night and while his family is away during the day. He may need a correction a time or two for whining, but is basically a well mannered boy in his crate. After a routine is established, you’ll have no problems. Bernie needs work with housetraining manners and does best when he has a “buddy” to show him all the right potty spots in the yard. He will need patience and consistency to ensure he continues with good manners. It is best that he not have run of the house until a potty routine is firmly established—baby gates should do the trick. He just wants to be where ever his family is and is content to hang out on the sofa or on his pillow. Bernie is just a typical doxie with a stubborn attitude about housetraining. With his laid-back personality, he just doesn’t understand what the fuss is about!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE! Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. If transporting by volunteers through our organization or a commercial transporter, a $35 fee for the Health Certificate must be added to the adoption fee.
If you have any questions or want more pictures, email his foster mom, Diane.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
