BIO:

Seamus (pronounced Shay-mus) is an Irish dog, born on St Patrick's day!

Temperament/personality:  Seamus is a loving goofball. He loves attention,  petting and treats and getting his belly rubbed.  He loves playing with his toys and enjoys playing outside too. He bounces around the house with a goofy "smile"  He is a beautifully marked long haired chocolate dapple and believes the whole world admires him!  Despite his happy go nature, he's always alert to activity and will let you know when a visitor comes by. He makes really amusing noises to get your attention.

Seamus is markedly overweight, weighing several pounds more than he should. Much to his disappointment, he has been placed on a diet. We weigh him at 21 pounds on our scale, and he should probably weigh more like 14-15 pounds. (We think he's a tweenie)  He is really cute at begging and can catch treats with his mouth in their air in a very entertaining fashion so his adoptive family will have to be strong and give Seamus the exercise and diet he really needs and limit treats. (when we treat all the dogs, Seamus gets a really tiny piece of treat)

History:  Seamus came from a family who was going through a divorce and found themselves unable to care for him properly and made the difficult decision to surrender him to rescue.

Seamus's coat has been neglected and he required clipping of quite a few mats and his coat needs to grow in again, but you can tell it will be thick and luxurious

Training:

Seamus is  housebroken as long as he stays on a schedule and gets trips outside regularly. He will use a pee pad when needed.  He is not bothered by cold weather and is always eager to go outside to do his business.

He walks nicely on a leash and enjoys going out. This is good, because this guy needs lots of exercise to shed the excess weight. He was well behaved but reserved to strangers when we took him into the pet store and the feed store.

His former owner reports that he does not like being in the car and howls and cries, but honestly, the times we've had him in the car he has been perfectly behaved, even looking out the window a bit, and only whining a tiny bit.

He comes when he is called, and does a "beg pretty" trick that is very cute.

We've been working on barking a bit, he tends to alert to activity in the other part of my house when my teenager is bouncing around, but we've been working on that and he is responding well to the training and much less likely to alert bark inappropriately.

He also is not a fan of being surprised, and will react with barking and charging if he's startled, and for this reason we're not recommending him to families with small children, families with older kids over about 12 years old who know how to treat a dachshund should be fine.

He also needs some work with nail clipping without a fuss, we’ve been working on making it  less of a big deal and making a little progress.

He's fine with other dogs, but can get a little possessive about toys and chew treats but responds well to redirection.  He surrenders toys without a fuss to humans if you can catch him!  Seamus is happy sleeping in either  the big bed or in a dog bed.  He likes the big bed, but if you don’t lift him up in it, he’ll settle down in the dog bed pretty quickly.

Best environment:

He'll do fine with other dogs, or as an only dog if he's getting lots of human attention.

Seamus needs an adopter willing to help him shed his excess weight, which could be a serious health problem if allowed to continue. He will require regular exercise and walks.

Seamus has a very thick coat of fur and needs an adopter willing to brush  him regularly to avoid matting.  He’ll do best in an environment where he is free to roam in the house so he can be part of the human pack-he likes to with his humans around.

Seamus will do best with humans that love to cuddle and pet him and give him lots of belly rubs!

More about Seamus...MA

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
