BIO: COOPER 4 IS OVER HIS HEARTWORMS AND READY FOR A FOREVER HOME!! COOPER 4 came from Decatur, AL was turned in as a stray but unlucky for him he was heartworm positive and was not able to be adopted out. They contacted us and asked us to take him. He has completed his treatment and is now ready for his new home. Cooper is a little shy when he first meets you but after he gets to know you and gets a few treats he will be your best buddy. Cooper is very smart and would be a real star in an obedience class. He knows how to sit and comes when he is called. He walks well on a leash and enjoys going for walks. Cooper gets along with all the other dogs in the foster home and even likes to play some, but is mostly a laid back little fellow. He has met a few fat old cats and after a few sniffs ignored them even when they laid in his bed, but he may react differently to a cat that runs from him. When he first goes to his new home he will be shy, but gets over that very quickly. Because of his shyness, Cooper would do best in a home with no young children. He would be fine with older children who understand that he needs his own space. He is a quiet dog and rarely barks even when the rest of the household gets going. He sits patiently for his meals and sometimes a cute little whine escapes when he is impatient. Cooper sleeps happily in his crate at night and sometimes goes in there with a bone to chew on during the day. Cooper likes to snooze by my chair or sit in my lap while I read or check e-mails. He's doing very well on house-training. He still will mark occasionally but that has improved dramatically. He will just need to be monitored at first. If you are looking for a smart, handsome, laid back little pal, Cooper is the man for you.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
