Bio:

If I could use one word to describe Bernard, it would be ADORABLE! He is just that cute. He is tiny and has a puppy face. He would be happiest sitting on his person's lap all day long! Bernard came from a small breeder in SC who was getting out of the business. She took good care of her dachshunds!

Bernard is a purebred reverse piebald dachshund who is starting to really come out of his shell. He has never really been socialized with a lot of people so he is still timid. Bernard should go to a family who understands this and is willing to take it slow and calm with him. Bernard's favorite thing to do is jump into a pile of blankets and roll around in them! He makes cute little noises when he gets his belly rubbed and he is really starting to show an interest in toys and normal "doggie" things. Because he is timid, i believe that he would do well in a home with no children under the age of 7 who know how to be gentle and are familiar with the dachshund breed. If you are willing to give him some time and lots of love, Bernard is the PERFECT companion. He is the kind of little boy who would love to go everywhere with you. He is so good and quiet and will just sit on your lap and give kisses every so  often to remind you that he loves you! He is great in the car and doesn't have a mean bone in his body.

Bernard is a very laid back kind of guy. He LOVES other dogs and he needs to go to a home with at least one other dog in the home. He has grown up with other dogs as his companions and I think he would be very sad without a fur buddy! However, I don't think he would do well with an overly alpha dog. He needs to develop and feel secure in his surroundings.

Bernard does well in his crate but he needs a family who spends time at home so they can work with him to help him come out of his shell. He loves to be held and is the PERFECT lapdog. When Bernard gets excited, his whole body wiggles...we call it his happy dance. Its the cutest thing you will ever see. Bernard is not a huge barker. He will whine a bit when he wants to come in from outside and he also makes excited noises when its dinner time but for the most part, he is sweet and quiet!

Bernard does very well with pottying outside. He might have some accidents as he learns the routines of his new home but he responds VERY well to praise and is eager to please. Now that we have him on a schedule, he knows to go potty outside to get a treat and lovings.

This little guy also will need some additional training on a leash. This is a new concept for him and for this reason, he must go to a home with a fenced in yard.

Please consider adopting this sweet b oy into your home. I guarantee he will win you over with his first kisses and will be your most loyal companion in the years to come!

Good with Dogs

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
