Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteer that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or up and down the West Coast. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other but some day we hope to have enough volunteers to do that as well for now please look for dogs on your coast. Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.
Hands down Schnitzle is the easiest foster we have ever had in our four years of rescue. She’s loving, she listens, she’s gentle and she asks for very little in life. She wants to be near the humans and part of the pack and that’s it. Things to note:
Schnitzle loves a walk and does fantastic on a leash. She doesn’t pull or run and does like to stop and smell the grass/roses
She has a mellow personality in everything from eating to just being around the house
She is not a barker; an occasional whine comes out if she misses human companionship but it’s a rare event
Schnitzle doesn’t like vacuum cleaners (loud noises) or brooms but she doesn’t freak out about it; she quietly finds another place to lie down until you’re done and then returns to her bed.
She knows how to use a dog door and enjoys the freedom it offers
She’s o.k. with a crate, but honestly, she’s so mellow she’d probably just lie in her bed if it were next to yours
Eating is something that doesn’t excite her too much (unlike many of the other dachshunds we’ve had); she likes food but she’s just not intense about it (she does love Baby Belle cheese and salmon skin though)
She loves to be snuggled and loved on; she gives kisses in return
History:
Schnitzle came to our rescue from a shelter in Arkansas. We don’t have any history on her other than what has occurred with us. We got her when she was visibly pregnant but did not know how far along. She was not eating a lot when she came to us and we concluded from this and from her size that she was ready to deliver. We took her to the vet when she did not go into labor and found all of her puppies had died and were being reabsorbed. The vet did an emergency operation and removed her uterus because the puppy sacs had attached to the uterus. She made it through the surgery with flying colors and continues to heal. She has taken on our one year old dachshund as her puppy and cares for him by cleaning him and keeping him company in bed. It is one of the most touching things I have ever witnessed. She has also taken on the role of “Aunt Schnitzy” to a litter of seven puppies that we had soon after Schnitzle’s operation. She has continued to help train and care for the puppies after the mother left. She makes sure all dogs and puppies have clean ears and that they know appropriate dog behavior. She doesn’t play with them though, she’s more of the old southern belle type.
Training:
She responds to her name and comes when you ask her.
She has learned sit and can now wait for her food and the release command before eating.
She doesn’t know a lot of other commands yet but she is quick to learn
I would recommend training so she can build her self confidence (training enables the dog to feel it knows how to communicate with us and therefore builds its self confidence).
Schnitzle does have accidents in the house occasionally. Many of these occurred while she was pregnant and the others while she has been on pain medication for the surgery. We continue to praise her for going outside, we go outside at regular intervals and recommend training basic commands to build self confidence. The combination of these should alleviate the few accidents she has.
She rides very, very well in a car. She sits in the seat quietly. She’s very well behaved.
Best environment for Schnitzle:
A family who will be around a lot; she loves the companionship; loves to go places and is well behaved
The company of other dogs (she’s fine with bigger dogs or smaller dogs and different breeds)
Older kids (if any); she loves both my son (12) and daughter (7)
A yard to roam in (she’d love a couple who enjoys gardening; she hangs outside with us when we work outside and enjoys being out there)

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
