We received a call from a shelter in KY that they had found a stray dachshund. We rushed up there to find poor Dixie2. She had been attacked by another dog and had wounds all over her. We immediately rushed her to the vet. At that point the vet cleaned all her wounds, up dated her on her shots, spayed her, removed a mammary tumor, and treated her for parasites. Poor Dixie2 came to us neglected as could be, but you can’t tell her that. She is the happiest little girl around. She LOVES everyone. Dixie2 is good with kids, cats, and small dogs. We do not think she would do well in a home with large dogs. She tends to bark and be very nervous around them. We can only assume the dog that attacked her was a big dog. She does not know a stranger and happily greets everyone at the door with a wag of her tail. She is house broken and will sit at the door when she is ready to do her business. Of course until she learns your schedule she may have an accident or two. She has a few patches of hair missing where her wounds are healing but we expect them to grow back in nicely. Dixie2’s favorite pastime is to sit on the back of the couch beside you and watch tv. All she wants to do is be loved. If you feel you can give Dixie2 the kind of home she deserves please fill out an application and her foster mom will be in contact with you.
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
