BEING FOSTERED IN B'HAM, AL

Note from Casey - I didn't think I would be here today but here I am. There's plenty of food and water and love here and I didn't always have that. I've been so sick that I wasn't sure I wanted to keep trying but foster mom and those nice people at the vet's office wouldn't give up on me. (Well, they're nice but sometimes there are needles and I don't like that part.) I still get scared sometimes and I sure need somebody who wants to spend time with me.

Casey is the emaciated little girl on support page. She's finally ready for a forever home of her own. Casey was abandoned by her owners and left to starve. When she was rescued by a Good Samaritan, she was close to death. After several weeks of intensive treatment, Casey came home to recuperate and build strength so she could be treated for heartworms. For Casey, heartworm treatment turned out to be harder than usual. She had serious reactions to the medications and we came close to losing her again. After all of that, she still tested positive and required more treatment. We're thrilled to say that tests are negative now and she's finally free of heartworms. Through the time Casey has been with her foster mom, she's had plenty of days when she didn't feel well. When she was not feeling well, she would come put her head in her foster mom's hand. She wanted her head held just so and then she would relax. We promised her that she won't ever feel bad again because she's hungry or she's being treated for a preventable disease.

Casey loves playing with toys and enjoys being outside. She heads out through the doggie door every morning to be sure the yard is just like it was the day before. She sleeps in the big bed and has been known to wake up during the night and come give kisses and then go right back under the covers to sleep. Casey needs to know that she is secure and loved. She does fine with other dogs but she can by shy at first. She hasn't been around cats or small children. She has much love to give. If you have time to give love back to her and you need more information, you can email her foster mom at swblanton@gmail.com.

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
