As of this writing we’ve had Wilson for two weeks and he has blossomed into the most wonderful and joyful little puppy.  Wilson is five months old.  In addition to his outstanding looks (he has no idea how cute his is), Wilson is a playful boy who loves to snuggle.  He’s bright, quick to train and gets along well with other dogs.  I recommend he have other dogs to play with.  He’s a bundle of energy (but not overly energetic)!   Wilson has just learned how to play (he had no idea how when we first got him).  I must credit our older dogs for teaching Wilson how to behave around humans and how to play.

He loves to be near the humans.  Wilson gets along well with my six year old girl and 12 year old boy.  I don’t recommend he go into any family with young children who may pull his tail or frighten him.  Training:

Wilson is o.k. with a crate if he is close to you, but he will howl if left in a crate at night in a different room (continued crate training in this area and he’ll be fine).

Potty training is work in progress.  I believe he was kept outside for the entire first five months of his life so he never had to learn.  Again, he’s a quick study so I’m sure he’ll get the potty training down.

Wilson does get separation anxiety and he barks.  Our approach is to reward him when he is quiet and in his bed.  We ignore his barking (turn our back to him) and reward him when he is quiet.  It seems to be working just one week into the lessons.

Good with Dogs

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
