Update: Precious, loving, sweet to the bone! Sabrina has adapted to life in a home beautifully. She has decided being held and loved on is wonderful, and wants as much as she can get. She's turned into a real little cuddler! She wants to be with me every step. She isn't one to bark much, does well at bath time, and is the best dog I've ever seen at getting her nails done. She has a slightly shy personality and still doesn't interact with visitors - unless they happen to be canine. She has done great with visiting dogs! I've had so much fun watching her gain confidence and learning her personality. Sabrina is just a dream to have around and is going to add something very special to the lucky family that takes her home.

BIO: Sabrina came to me about 2 weeks ago. The first thing I noticed about her was her beautiful face. Then I saw she had the darling little stubby legs and fat little feet covered in fur that feels like velvet. She is long and slim and the ideal picture of a Doxie. So Pretty!!
She came from a breeder and seems to have been well cared for, but knows little of what most of us think of as a normal life for a Dachshund. She’s very timid and will run from me at times, but if I'm sitting on the couch, she is all too eager to be in my lap or napping next to me. Yesterday I began teaching her one of the main points of being a spoiled Doxie, and that was the joy of a Tummy Rub!! It was fun watching her slowly relax in my arms and cuddle close to me like a baby, while I rubbed her underside and scratched her rib area. Doesn't every Dachshund love and demand a tummy rub?!?! She'll have this down in no time!!
She isn't used to a leash, but we've tried it out a few times, and I know with a little more experience she will learn to love it. I do know she loves a rawhide chew bone and will entertain herself for ages with one. Just be aware if you have other dogs,  that she hasn't learned to share! She of course is used to a crate. She spends her day there while I am at work and has slept in one in my bedroom until last night. She finally joined us in the big bed for the first time and did surprisingly well. Well who doesn't like to snuggle under the covers?
What has told me the most about Sabrina, has come from my own dogs. They accepted her right away and nestle on the couch together, grooming and giving each other kisses. I think they sensed immediately that she has a good spirit, gentle nature and a heart ready to love.
She has so much to learn about a normal life,  and a lot of joy to share along the way. She needs a family that will give her the patience she needs and expose her gently to as many experiences as possible. Come be the one to share “A Whole New World” with her.

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
