BIO:

Personality plus, HAPPY-GO-LUCKY!  Nothing gets this little guy down; he is the most joyful little creature I've ever seen.  Reid-Jerry (RJ) is the most sweet, lovable, kind and friendly doxie I have seen in awhile.  He loves to cuddle and snuggle, he has a good appetite. He loves plushy toys and pulls the entire toy box out when he wants to play. . He loves to be in the grass and play. Gets along well with his foster brother and sisters. Doesn't seem to like cats at all. And doesn't seem to have a care in the world.  Despite not having a tail, he has NO nerve damage to his back at all.  Walks and runs just fine- at his first vet visit there were children there and he was very nice. Doesn't bark much.  He would make a great addition to any family that has the time to take care of him right. This little chocolate drop of love certainly has the disposition to steal your heart. There IS a home for EVERY dog.

RJ has filled out some since he came into rescue and looks great, he will never be a fat dog with all the energy he has and he and his Foster Sister Clara wrestle and roll around all the time.  RJ loves fuzzy toys and squeakers.  RJ likes to have a  “baby” with him all the time. Jerry loves to chase balls but the bringing back part still seems to escape him. A work in progress..

RJ has also gotten a new wardrobe as he's filled out his some.  he now has some stylish shirt and shorts sets to strut around in, he wears the shorts on outings. Most of the day while out in the yard or going in and out from the house we let him run around in “naked” He loves to lie in the sun and show off his rich dark chocolate brown color. He does need his bladder expressed still avoid infection at least every two hours during the day however he sleeps all through the night all snuggled up underneath the covers with his shirt and diaper or onesie we know there is a home Out there for Jerry -- RJ it will take a very special person to take care of this very special boy are you that special person?

He loves to run and play, even though he's pretty clumsy!  He's always bumping or running into something, and I feel so sad for him because he doesn't have any fat yet for padding. He's just one big goof that will always put a smile on your face.   We have linoleum floors throughout the house, so when he rolls over or goes around a corner too fast and “wipes out”…  He just shakes it off and goes about his own little ways, happy to be alive!  He absolutely LOVES to be in your arms, loves to be warm.  He would be so happy if he could sleep with you, under the covers. He has so much fun with other dogs, too... He's not scared of them (or people!)  At all, he just wants to play with everyone!

Jerry is never going to have bowel or urinary control.  His muscles at the end of his anus are stretched and are nerve damaged. He can poop on his own but he doesn't really know when its coming- he has control about an inch or so in but not at the end.  When he does poop he feels something as he runs around in circles like he’s chasing his tail (If he had one).  When RJ came into rescue he had one of the most severe Urinary Tract Infections ever and was dehydrated. He had fluids and antibiotics to get him all fixed up. Jerry MUST have his bladder expressed every 2-3 hours except while he is sleeping through the night to prevent any more infections.

RJ kinda hops like a bunny when I first put the diaper on and is really cute as a bug. He needs a diaper when you go to bed at night or crate him when we leave the house to keep him clean and dry. Otherwise he runs around “naked” most of the day, going in and outside to play in the yard and get fresh air. He needs his bladder expressed –pretty easy once you get the hang of it at least 3-4 times per day.  If his bladder gets full, he leaks. When he gets his diaper on, we also attached a sanitary pad for his urine, then he gets a baby onesie on as he has no tail to keep the diaper on and we pin the diaper to the onesie so it doesn’t slip off- He is one HOT DOG in his stylish onesies- Most of them all have pictures of dogs on them!

RJ’s head and feet are way too big for his body right now. He was just 7 lbs when he came into rescue. Jerry is still very skinny, he could use another 4-5 lbs easy and we are working on that with lots of puppy food to fatten him up. He has lots of scars on his face, neck, head, nose- who knows what happened to him in the past, maybe a big dog fight, coyotes, bait dog? , But it was a very hard life for such a little guy.

Do you have the time, patience and love to give this young beautiful doxie a furever home?

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
