Up until a week ago, Lena didn't know what her future would hold.  At 8 years old, she found herself being stuffed in a wire crate and being left outside of Animal Control on one of the coldest and rainiest nights of the year. She waited all night for her family to come back but they never did. Her tiny 10 pound body was shaking uncontrollably when the shelter workers found her the next morning. Lena came in with health problems relating to long time neglect such as soars and dental problems.  Yet Lena never showed any signs of aggression. She was quiet, sweet and quickly burrowed under the blanket they gave her.

She waited at the shelter for someone to rescue her but no one did. Afterall, who wants an 8 year old dachshund with health problems? Lena spent all weekend in her cold cage. On Monday, a member from All American Dachshund Rescue came and showed her that she was wanted! She was wrapped up in 3 blankets and quickly fell asleep on the ride home. She finally felt safe.

Despite the pain she is obviously in, Lena is starting to come out of her shell. We have learned that she has wonderful house manners. She is potty trained, crate trained, and promptly tucks herself into her bed every night. She doesn't know what kisses are and she is hesitant to crawl into a lap although its obvious she wants to!! She gets excited and she hops back and forth with her tail wagging. We think she will learn these things quickly because of her sweet nature! We are also working on getting her healthy and ready to be adopted! She walks well on a leash and loves to go outside. She also would love to just sleep in your lap all day long but is also content going off on her own as long as she knows you are nearby. She is a little bit underweight and could probably stand to gain another pound but she overall she is a very tiny girl and her new family will have to be careful about keeping her at a healthy weight. She also would do better with older dogs that know when to let Lena have her "naps in the sun" time.  She is a very laid back girl and has not shown one ounce of aggression since being in foster care. However, because she is a little older and has a petite build, she probably should go to a home with older children who know how to be careful with dachshund's backs.

Please help us show Lena that life will be happy for her from now on. Consider m aking Lena part of your family. I promise by just taking one look into those big brown eyes of hers will make you fall in love with this sweet and tiny girl forever!

Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport.

More about Lena...KY

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
