BIO: Meet Patriot! He's cute as a puppy, but actually, he’s 6 years old. This sweetie is teeny tiny at barely 8 pounds. He was surrendered by a breeder in North Carolina and has not been exposed to children or been well-socialized in general. He came into rescue very timid but is making great strides. He does not want to be picked up if you are towering over him; he will either run, submissive pee, or cower in fear. The good news is if you take a seat, he’ll come over to you to be picked up and loved on. He is slowly discovering that people are not to be afraid of, but please understand that he is a "work in progress."
Our must-haves for Patriot (no exceptions, please) include:
- A securely fenced yard that is attached to your home for him to safely potty and play
- Please do NOT fill out an application unless you can provide your experience with fearful, unsocialized dogs who have spent their life in a kennel instead of a home
- Patriot might be okay as an only dog if someone is home a lot to give him one-on-one attention, otherwise, he would do best with a well-socialized adult, small dog to learn from and keep him company while you are away
- Any men in the household must be patient since it may take a while for Patriot to feel comfortable since he has not spent time with men
- Since he is so small, any children living in or visiting the home should be 12 years or older
- Must be a Florida adopter, preferably within 50 miles of Sarasota for an in-person home visit
- No apartments, condos, or high-rises since Patriot has discovered his bark, and we wouldn’t want him disturbing your neighbors
Patriot had dental surgery in Tennessee a month ago, where he lost quite a few teeth. He had the balance of his dental done on March 27th here in Florida. He did lose his two upper canines, but looking on the bright side, he still has his two lower canines. He is currently eating softened kibble while his gums heal. Patriot has only been in his Florida foster home for a short time. His foster mom will update his bio as he becomes more settled in the home.
Everyone wants a longhair cream dachshund, so he will get many applications. AADR will select the best family to meet his needs. When completing your application, DON'T FORGET TO PROVIDE YOUR PRIOR EXPERIENCE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS PUPS.
Oh, BTW, every driver was enamored with Patriot on his 13-leg transport to Florida. He loved being held in the passenger seat by the non-driver. Such a good traveler, but he doesn’t need another lengthy trip. We can find him an adopter in Florida for sure!
============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund’s back or get bitten.
If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed on the bio form. They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.
There will be an additional $60 fee added for a required Health Certificate if traveling out of the state in which they are being fostered.
We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have any issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.
To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page. Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers who will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or Midwest. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
