BIO UPDATE (2/2/23): Cody is becoming quite the little gentleman! Even though we can only imagine what he has been through, in true Dachshund character, he has shown himself to be very resilient, clever, resourceful, and 100% ready to be a great companion. He is working daily on learning his commands and breaking some long-time bad habits. I think of him as a puppy with nine years of negative times that need to be replaced with only positive experiences and lots and lots of love, as he is just opening up and showing how affectionate he is.
Cody has made lots of four-legged pals and does well with other dogs as long as there is no food to compete for. He is definitely an alpha personality and will try to train you too! He does very well in the car and loves going to the park and to the dog store. Cody does have separation anxiety but is learning a little each day to be able to cope for short times without his person. I think he would be happiest to find his furever home with people who understand this and will give him tons of loving positive encouragement.
BIO: This story is going to make you sad and angry at the same time. Cody came from Alabama when he was turned in by his elderly owners saying they could no longer care for him. We understand that, but what we can’t understand is why they put one of those Walmart harnesses on him when he was little and NEVER took it off!! Because of that, behind his front legs, you’ll see it’s indented, and the fur is black since it was a black harness (you can see what we are referring to in the pictures). Why anyone would do that is beyond us... we don’t understand.
What we want for Cody is someone who will never do that to him again, and to prevent him from being in that kind of harness, we are going to give the new owners two custom-made harnesses that won’t go behind his front legs and constrict him again.
Our must-haves for adorable Cody include:
- A home where he’ll be an only dog and treated like a king
- A fenced yard is preferred, but he can go to a family that walks and potties on a leash because off-leash, he would be GONE!
- Someone who either works from home or is newly retired
- A home with no shared walls in case he decides to bark while you are away
Cody is a sweet, sweet dog, highly food motivated, and he loves to lay in a doggie bed. He doesn’t demand to be in the Big Bed, but if you want to, he’s willing and able.
We just want him to forget his past and have nothing but sunny skies from here on out, can you help this boy out?
============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund’s back or get bitten.
If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed on the bio form. They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.
There will be an additional $60 fee added for a required Health Certificate if traveling out of the state in which they are being fostered.
We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have any issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.
To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page. Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers who will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or Midwest. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
