PUPPY MILL SURVIVOR

Callie's past is a very sad story. She was rescued from a puppymill with over 200 small breed dogs. She has seen nothing but the inside of a backyard kennel for her entire life. Callie's sole purpose in life was to produce puppies and knew nothing of human touch or affection. She was rescued just in the nick of time—she was malnourished, had intestinal parasites, ear  mites, a respiratory infection, and gum disease so horrible that it was painful for her to eat.

Callie's future is much different! She is now feeling much better after several weeks at the vet. She was spayed, had a hernia repaired, is parasite free, and eating a healthy diet. Unfortunately, the gum disease was so extensive, she lost most of her teeth. Callie doesn't seem to mind at all and is just thankful to have a mouth that doesn't hurt any more. She is glad to have a plentiful and healthy diet and is able to eat just fine. Her foster mom just softens dry dog food with a little warm water.

Callie is a very timid little girl and being indoors and having “household” noises are new and scarry experiences. She is adapting very well and is learning to be good little lap dog and is enjoying being petted and sleeping in the big bed with her foster siblings and parents. Callie is a sensitive girl and will never be able to tolerate harsh words or punishment---a stern “no” is all she needs to correct a behavior. She is doing quite well with her housetraining and has very few accidents and has already learned to walk well on a leash. Callie has not been exposed to men in her life, so she is more comfortable with women. She tolerates her foster dad, but really has “velcroed” herself to her foster mom. Callie has perfected “shadowing” and is always near her foster mom, preferably in her lap! She enjoys being around her foster siblings, both male and female, and is learning from their behavior that it's OK around here! When Callie encounters a situation that scarry, her instinct is to run—she does not snap or act aggressively at all.

Callie is a tiny little girl, a VERY PRETTY one, too!---that has spent her life afraid, hungry, and in pain----NO MORE! Callie is ready for a forever home that is quiet  and has a predictable routine with a person(s) that will give her nothing but love, kind words, and a lap to snuggle in. If you have a big heart and lots of patience, Callie will love you unconditionally and bless your life for the rest of her life! Feel free to email her foster mom if you have any questions or would like more pictures.

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
