Pharo is an owner surrender from White River Junction, VT. He is 1 yr 11 months old, a beautiful long-haired red sable pure bred dachshund. The owners did not have him neutered as a pup and at a year and a half old, he started to get an attitude. He nipped and apparently bit a child. He was the only dog in a household with four children ranging from age 3 to 15. He is now neutered and he is fine with me. I do not believe he was reprimanded for mis-behaving in a consistent manner. I have had him for a week now and he is getting along with all my girls and has learned some manners. It is obvious that the hormone levels are decreasing and he is calming down significantly. In another 3 months, I think he will be a totally different dog than he was prior to being neutered. Pharo is a clinger, meaning that he attaches himself to his human and wants to be with you all the time. He is housebroken when kept to a schedule. He walks exceptionally well on a leash and loves going for walks. He sleeps in his crate at night, although he would love to share the big bed with his human. He gets a chew bone at night and when he sees that bone, he goes running into his crate waiting for it. Pharo is very loving, likes to be held and belly rubs. He does bark when you first come home and he does this little dance maneuver that is so cute. So far, the only time I have seen any aggression from him is when we are out walking and a larger dog (not on a leash) comes near. Then Pharo growls and tries to be protective. However, when I give him a little tug and the command "walk", his attention is diverted and he will leave the larger dog and keep walking. Pharo is also very good in a car. Can you give Pharo the new home he needs?
Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
