BIO:  Baxter came from East Tennessee when his family had to surrender him because they could not afford the surgery for his neck injury. We jumped into action, drove up and got him, and immediately took him to Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners. He had surgery two days later and is now healed and ready for his forever home.

Our must-haves for this handsome little guy include:

  • A fenced yard
  • Another dog around his age to pal around with
  • A family who will not allow him to jump on or off the furniture
  • A home with no or only a few stairs
  • His weight maintained at 10-11 pounds
  • No big dogs in the family

Please do not ask us to make exceptions on these requirements. Baxter is probably one of the best dogs I’ve fostered. He is quiet unless other dogs start barking, completely housebroken, covers himself up at night in his x-pen, and is just a happy boy. He is very loving and loyal.

Because Baxter has now had an episode with his back, the potential adopter must understand that if you don’t follow the requirements you are putting him in danger of going down in his lower back, we do not want that for Baxter.

If you are willing to do everything listed for Baxter, you’ll be adopting one of the best dogs!

More about Baxter in VA

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
