Meet Flint!  He was pulled from the Greenville, SC animal shelter shortly before he was scheduled to be euthanized.  He was found as a stray severely emaciated with a wounded rear leg.  Flint has been recovering for several months in a foster home and is a new dog.  He is at a good weight, has been neutered, treated for heartworms, had 11 bad front teeth pulled, and x-rays to determine the extent of his leg injury.  It turns out that most of his troubles are due to an old injury.  At some point his pelvis was crushed and his leg broken.  The injuries healed on their own and the bones in his leg ended up a little crooked.  The wound on his leg when he was found was from some other accident and has healed very nicely.  Looking at the x-rays the vet was amazed that the little guy can even walk, but Flint gets along just fine.  He walks on all 4 legs, but if he is in a hurry he just picks up his bad leg and runs along on 3.  He will be prone to arthritis when he gets older, but for now it doesn’t seem to bother him.  Flint enjoys going for walks and when he gets tired he stops and waits to be picked up.  He can make it up and down a few steps, but a whole flight of stairs is too much for him.

Flint is a funny and feisty little fellow.  He is the smallest one in the house, but all of the toys and bones seem to end up in his bed.  He loves to play with squeaky toys and run around with the other dogs.  Flint is also happy sitting in a lap or in his dog bed under a blanket.  He can be possessive when it comes to his toys, although he will reluctantly give them up.  Because of his small size and big attitude he would have to be supervised if there are any large dogs in the household.  He would do best in a home with no small children.  He is very interested in cats and probably wouldn’t do well with cats or other small animals.  Flint stays happily in his crate during the day while I am at work and is housebroken.  When he first came he slept in his crate, but now that he is healthy he sleeps in the big bed.

Flint is unsure of new people, so he will need some time to adjust to a new home.  He does fine if there is someone he knows with him, but if he is left at the vet, for example, he is very nervous.  He’s had a pretty rough life until now and still isn’t willing to trust strangers.

Despite his tough past, Flint is a happy little dog and will bring years of joy to his new guardian.

*** The Main bio picture and the 1st picture below were taken the most recently and the last 3 pictures were taken in June when he still needed to gain a little bit more weight.

Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

More about Flint

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
