BIO (11/12/2019): Penny came to rescue when her family had children and she was unable to adjust to the changes. She is very shy and nervous when she first meets new people, so her adopter will need to be patient and give her a week or two to settle in.
Penny would do best in an adult home with a fenced yard. She gets along well with other small dogs and cats. Another small dog in the family would help build her confidence. Penny walks well on a leash and enjoys walks around the neighborhood. She also rides well in the car.
When nobody is home Penny stays in a dog friendly area. She will use a pee pad if needed. She is working on her house training, but will need some patience and frequent trips outside. A fenced yard and dog door will be a big help.
At night she has been sleeping in a dog bed or crate; she would be very happy to sleep with her people. She has a cute personality and is a real snuggler once she gets to know you.
If you have the patience to work with Penny's shyness, you will be rewarded with a pretty little friend!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
