Chaco is a 4 year old chocolate dachshund. He is neutered, vaccinated and current on flea and tick control and heartworm prevention. He is a small guy at 8 pounds but full of spunk. He was an owner surrender for unknown reasons and ended up in a shelter in Alabama. When he got into his foster home he was very scared of everything and has taken some time to start coming out of his shell. He is starting to play and chase the other dogs in the house. He gets along great with other dogs, cats, kids etc. although kids under 8 are not recommended. He is skittish and will lay down in submission to anyone coming at him too quickly. We are working on his self confidence by ignoring the submissive behavior when it happens. He will go outside to pee and we are working on going outside to poop. He is a bit hesitant on a leash but will walk pretty well with the other dogs and usually does his business on the walks. He sleeps under the covers in the big bed all night and will lay right in your arms all night if you let him. This little guy is a real sweet boy and will require a patient new home to continue ongoing work on trust issues and pottying issues. I will continue to update as we go along. Out of state and Canadian adoptions are welcome. We have several transporters that for a fee will bring the dog as close to you as possible up the Eastern seaboard. A home visit is required on all adoptions. We also micro chip all our dogs and must pass the cost on to the adopter. It is only $10.00. Thank you for your interest in a rescue. To fill out an application for this dog please go to www.ssdr.org and fill out an app. we will be in touch shortly to do a phone interview. It is also best to have a dog in mind that you would like to adopt or if you don't please let us know that you'd like a dog that best fits your lifestyle. Keep in mind that we are all volunteers and have other obligations so please let your references and vet know that we will be calling to vai all info that you put on your application. If you use two vets then please let us know that so we get all info on your dog possible to determine if you are a suitable home for our dog. If you do not let us know these things this maybe the factor that you will be turned down to adopt one of our dogs.

Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
