BIO (2/17/2018):  Mikey wants you to know that he will once again be his handsome self when the hair grows back around the area where he had his eye removed.

Mikey is a sweet little guy who was turned in to rescue when his owner could no longer care for him.  Before he came to rescue, he spent most of his time in a crate.  Mikey had an injured eye that he had lived with for a while.  He went to the vet and had his teeth cleaned and his bad eye removed and he is feeling much better.  Mikey lost several teeth during his dental cleaning, but has no trouble eating dry food that has been soaked in water.

Despite all of the time he spent in a crate, Mikey doesn't mind being crated.  He often hangs out in there with the door open.  He spends most of his time loose in the house.  He is housebroken and will use a pee pad if left for extended periods.  Mikey walks well on a leash and prefers short walks, so if you are looking for a walking buddy, Mikey is not for you.  If you are looking for a gentle little buddy to hang out around the house with, then Mikey is your guy.

Mikey is friendly with new people.  He gets along well with other dogs and would be happiest with an older dog buddy or somebody who is home most of the day.  He has not been around cats, but would probably be fine with them.  He would love to sleep with his people, but does fine in a dog bed snuggled with a blanket.

Mikey is a quiet little fellow with a sweet personality.  He would be a great addition to a quiet household!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
