BIO UPDATE (10/22/2018):  News Flash! …Barbie is OK with cats!  She just ignores them.  She also does well with children if they are respectful of her space and are gentle with her.  Children should be 10 yrs of age or older.

BIO (10/18/2018):  Barbie is a dog that simply enjoys life!  She is exuberant and joyful, which is amazing considering she came from an extreme hoarding situation.  Her tail is always wagging and she loves her people!

Since Barbie came from a hoarding situation there was a lot of inbreeding, so her legs are longer than a well bred dachshund, but she's still all dachshund in behavior.

Barbie is about 12 months old and still has puppy energy and vitality.  She is about 13 pounds and  a jumper in her excitement (and sometimes piddles in submission), but she’s learning to jump straight up instead of ON her person.  Barbie is very curious and something of a monkey, and tends to climb everything.  As a result, we keep her in an x-pen for her safety when we are not at home to watch her, and with us in the same room when we are home so we are able to continue training the good behavior and correct her immediately when she does something we don’t like.  She's a chewer and will chew on everything from your hand to carpet fibers, she needs to be redirected when this happens and she loves NylaBones.  We have been working on “inside” manners and she will need the training continued once adopted.

The good news is that she seems to be VERY smart and picks up on training cues quickly, and responds extremely well to praise.  She needs lots of attention and would be ideal with children over age 10.  Another dog in the house would be helpful to keep her company but she would also be good as an only dog since she really craves “people-time".   Barbie tends to have separation anxiety and barks quite a bit when her people leave, so she would not be a good candidate for an apartment.  She is crate trained and is very happy in her crate at night as long as she knows you’re in the same room.  We are working on potty training and making good progress, but Barbie must go out on a regular schedule to reinforce the good results.  She is new to leash training but taking to it easily.

She has not been tested with cats but considering her playful nature, I would not anticipate any problems.

If Barbie sounds like the dog for you, email her foster mommy for more information, or click the link below to begin an adoption application. Don’t wait too long, because this fun loving and lovable pup will get snapped up right away!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
