BIO UPDATE (11/26/2018):  Howard is really coming around!  He is a super love bug now who wants nothing more than to be snuggled up against you or his doggy buddies.  His timidity is getting much better and he is trusting his foster mom in situations that used to scare him.  He is such a polite, gentle soul who minds so well if he understands what you’re asking.  Hard to find a more loving, well-behaved little guy who tries as hard as he does to please.  He wants so bad to have a forever home with a doggy friend to play with.

BIO UPDATE (10/22/2018):   Howard is super smart!!  He has learned how to walk on a leash now and stays right by my side like a perfect gentleman.  He walks a couple of miles a day with his foster brother in the park and he never even looks when we go by dogs, people, bikes, kids playing, etc.  Howard knows "come" and "down" and we are working on more commands to help build his confidence.  He really needs at least one confident, well-socialized, balanced dog in his new home to help him continue becoming a confident pup.  Howard is still very timid and scared at times, very much like he has been abused in the past, but he loves to be in your lap and will even give little kisses and gently put his paw on your hand to pet him.

BIO (10/11/2018): Howard is learning to trust each day and all he needs is someone that is patient to allow him to adjust to his new home.  Howard was picked up as a stray with another little dog.  He is very fearful and timid right now but is working hard to overcome these issues.  He panics when put on a leash so his new foster home is working on these issues and getting him to trust people and calmly accept a leash.

He is very polite with other dogs and knows how to go out the doggy door and sleeps in his crate quietly at night.  Howard will need a Dachshund savvy home that understands how to work with fearful dogs and has the patience to let him go at his own pace and not be pushed or stressed.  He will also need a home with another well-adjusted secure dog to give him confidence.

If you think you can provide a loving patient home for Howard, have the experience to help him learn basic commands, and can help him with his fear/trust issues, please fill out an application for this wonderful boy!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
