BIO UPDATE (11/26/2018):  Ralph is such a sweet boy!  He is potty trained and has not had an accident in the house in quite a long time.  He is now a healthy weight of 15 pounds and looks just perfect.  Ralph’s hair has grown out quite a bit, and my oh my, is he a handsome boy!!!

Ralph continues to get along great with my other 4 dachshunds, one of which is a puppy who tries to annoy him by biting at his legs or ears like puppies will do.  Ralph is so gentle with the puppy and growls at him to let the puppy know to quit biting his ears, but never once has Ralph snapped at the puppy, even when the puppy is being a puppy.

This little guy loves to go on walks and walks beautifully on a leash with a harness.  He loves sleeping in the big people bed with his people.  He snuggles up and never moves all night.  Ralph is crated when I leave the house and does not seem to mind at all.  He is perfectly happy being in the crate until I return.

Although he is affectionate and loves his humans, Ralph is becoming a more confident, secure, and independent pup.  He used to jump over the gate many times a day to follow my every step.  Now, he no longer jumps the gate knowing that I’ll be back in a few minutes if I go into another part of the house.

If you can provide a secure, fenced backyard, lots of love for a boy that will love you forever, and want a very loving, sweet dog, please submit an application for Ralph.  As Ralph’s foster mom, I will be so sad to see him go, but he deserves a forever home where he will be loved and be well cared for.  He will love you back even more!  Could you be that person????

BIO UPDATE (10/24/2018):  Ralph continues to be such a sweet boy and gets along with all 4 of my other dogs.  The first several days he was at my house he did not have any potty accidents, but that has changed.  Ralph seems to like to poop in the middle of the night some of the time.  I think we can break that habit by crating him at bed time and of course take him out in the morning as soon as he wakes up.  Once he breaks this habit, I’m sure he will want to sleep in the people bed again!  I sure would if I were in his shoes!

It will be very, very important for Ralph’s adopter to have a very secure fence at least 5 feet high.  He is definitely an escape artist and a runner, and in very good shape.  If he were to get out you better hope you have your sprinting shoes on!  Ralph will dart out in a second if you open a door to the yard.  Unless the door opens to a fenced yard you must be very careful that he is not standing beside you when the door opens because he will dart out before you even know he’s gone.  He’s young and has a lot of energy.  He loves to go on walks and has become a very good little leash walker with a harness.  Ralph is a jumper and a climber as well, which is all the more reason the fence has to be escape proof!

At night, or after playing, Ralph wants nothing more than to sit in your lap and snuggle.  He’s such a little love bug!  He really is so sweet!

Although Ralph was very thin when he got to his foster home and needed to gain weight, he is now at a perfect weigh for his size.  About a week ago he weighed 14 pounds. He’s lean and solid and looks great.  Ralph is not food aggressive at all.  All my dogs eat at the same time and each is very respectful of the other's food.  Each dog knows exactly where his or her place in the kitchen is to eat.

BIO (10/8/2018):  Ralph is part Schnauzer and part Dachshund and is such a sweet loving dog.  There’s not a mean bone is his body!  Ralph loves his foster mom and dad and wants to be with them non-stop.  He loves to cuddle and sit in your lap, and of course sleep in the big people bed!  Once in bed he never makes a sound and sleeps all night.

Ralph was picked up as a stray in Oak Ridge, Tennessee; matted, hungry and very thin.  Now that he is in our care, he is quickly getting his weight back up to a normal healthy weight.  As his foster mom, I have only had him 8 days and he already feels like one of the pack here.  He gets along great with the 3 other dachshunds in the household, one female and two males.  Each dog is very respectful of the other dog’s food.  Each one eats at their spot in the kitchen and nobody bothers anyone else while eating.

Ralph will need to go to a forever home that has a very secure fence in the back yard.  He will try to dart out a door when it is opened, and he’s very fast!  He’s quite a jumper as well.  He will also need lots of chew toys because he likes to chew on things.  He quickly stops when told “NO”, but I wouldn’t leave anything around that you don’t want gnawed unless you are keeping an eye on him.  I feel like he will quickly learn what is okay to chew on and what isn’t.

Ralph has been on several walks during his first week at our house.  I don’t think he had ever been walked on a leash before coming here.  He’s doing quite well with his leash training.  Every time he is walked, he gets better and better!

As far as potty training... he has done fantastic!  In 8 days here, he has only pooped in the house one time.  He had just done most of it outside but apparently had not quite finished.  He has not peed in my house, not one time!  I would say he is fully potty trained.

Ralph is crated when I have to leave the house for a little while.  He’s doesn’t like going in it, but will, and quickly settles down.  We have a security system that I can watch the cameras on my phone while I’m away, so I know with certainty that he settles right down and quits crying shortly after I leave.

Ralph is one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever met!  He is absolutely no trouble at all.  He’s been a perfect little gentleman at our house.  If you can give Ralph a great home, please fill out an application for him.  He will make a wonderful pet and family member.  He will love you with all he has, and he deserves someone to love and care for him all his life.

Good with Dogs, Good with Adults, Does Good in the Car, Affectionate

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
