Let me introduce you to Thomas (aka Tommy). He has had a rough year yet has managed to keep such a sweet spirit. He wanted to help me find his new forever home so he is sitting on my lap right now with his chin on the desk and keeping me company.

Thomas was given up by his original family last year when the man got promoted and the lady was forced to choose between their 2 dachshunds. Poor Tommy lost and began his long journey in search of a family that will be as loyal to him as he will be to them! He then came into rescue and was adopted by a nice family here in SC. However, they didn’t have any other dogs and we learned that Thomas gets very lonely without another fur-buddy around to keep him company. He would howl when left home alone because he was so sad. Poor Tommy was just wondering why he couldn't go with them. The family decided that, although they loved him very much, Tommy deserved a home where he could be happy all the time. Because of this Thomas MUST go to a house with another dog…preferably another dachshund. He loves the other dachshunds in this house and even is learning to play with our 40 pound sheltie. He has exhibited none of this anxiety with me because the other dogs keep him company. Also, I have only heard him bark a couple of times since he has been with us and that is when someone walked by our fenced in backyard and all the other dogs started barking. He is very obedient and will stop when I tell him to.

Now he is with me and I am really enjoying getting to know him! Although I have only had him in my care for a couple of weeks, I can already tell that little Tommy is a keeper. He has not had any potty accidents in my house yet and also loves his crate! He eats in it and we leave him in it when we go to work. When we get home, he is all snuggled up in his blanket sleeping. However, I have been told by his previous family that he did have some separation anxiety and has some potty accidents while he was adjusting. So with all new adoptions, there may be an adjustment period so that Thomas can get used to his new family!

Although Thomas is a mix, he looks very much dachshund! When I take him for walks, people assume that he is a beautiful, red, long hair dachshund. I have also learned that he loves water!! His previous family said that he even enjoyed jumping into the lake with them. Thomas loves his walks but he tends to want to take control. He will need someone who will continue working with him on this and show him how to walk on a leash without pulling. Thomas will come with a Happy Dog Harness which really helps in this area.  He also LOVES car rides or really anything that allows him to be next to his person because really what could be better than that??

Although I have not personally seen him with kids or cats, I have heard from his previous foster home that he is fine with cats and does great with kids as long as they are familiar with dachshunds and know how to handle them. I think Thomas would do great with an active family that can share in their activities with him.

Did I mention what a handsome boy Tommy is? He has lashes that could melt any girls heart and a prance that I’m sure makes other dogs jealous. And he has not met a stranger yet. He is happy to give anyone kisses and snuggles. We went to Petsmart today and he went out of his way to get attention from everyone there so he could get some good scratches and hugs. When we go into the vet, all the girls swoon over him and tell me what a gentlemen he is.  I really am very proud to introduce him to you and I can’t wait to see what family can FINALLY take care of him and show him that he doesn’t have to worry about finding his forever family anymore! Are you Tommy's furever home?

Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

More about Thomas (aka Tommy)

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
