Hi, my name is Rita. My foster mom named me Rita Hayworth because of my beautiful red hair. I was scared when I got here. I would not let my new foster mom out of my sight. I am better now and love to play with my foster sisters and brother. We run outside and bark at my neighbors Jack and Lucy…but my most favorite thing to do is chase the rabbits out of my yard. My foster dad said he is so proud of me because the rabbits eat his plants. I am a lap potato…so my mom calls me. I do not know what that is but she holds me and rubs my tummy and calls me lap potato…I like it no matter what it is called!!! My mom says I am special because I have a white star on my chest and pink toenails.
Can I go home forever with you please?
Rita is a rescue from a puppy mill. She was kept in a cupboard for most of her life. She was very thin and very scared when we got her. She is a very sweet girl and you can tell she is beautiful by her photos. She is very smart and listens. Goes outside to potty and is done quickly so she may run and play. She barks at my husband. I think because he is big, but maybe some bad memories of the puppy mill. We are working on teaching her a quieter greeting.

Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

More about Rita

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
