BIO (4/17/2018): This sweet girl is very much in need of a home that is willing to work with her through all her anxieties. To say Nellie has had a very rough start is an understatement. She came into rescue with a terribly broken leg and broken spirit. AADR vets were able to fix the broken leg, but she will always limp and favor this leg by holding it up. The bones have mended, but her broken spirit has not. I have been working hard to try to gain her trust and I have made great progress but her fear wins out when it comes to others. She has started to play with toys and enjoys sitting in the sun. Nellie needs a family that is willing to teach her to trust again. If you have patience and the willingness to invest in her, you will receive more than you give. I know Nellie will make a great lifelong friend, if you are willing to teach her to love again.

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
