Hello, my name is Bess. Well, that is the new name I received after entering my foster home. I was brought to a shelter in a small Alabama town but was rescued before I was placed in the shelter. I had spent several weeks out in the cold before I was taken to the shelter. I had recently had a litter of pups which were separated from me on that day. I am awfully young to have been a mother already but I was. I had cherry eye in both eyes when I arrived but I have had my eyes”done” and I can now show off how beautiful my face is! It is so nice to have the care that I need after being neglected all my life!


I love to take off after squirrels and I will chase cats as well. It would probably be better if I live in a home without cats. You will have to keep me in a fence or on a leash when outside, my hunting instinct is very strong and those squirrels really get me revved up for a good chase. I am doing pretty good on my leash although I can have a little stubborn streak now and then just like most doxies. I am working very diligently on my basic commands but it is hard since I never had to do those things before I came to my foster home.

I am very loyal and I love to lavish my attention on my foster mom. I follow her around a lot and love to sit in her lap when she sits down. I love attention of any kind, be it a kind word or the gentle touch of a loving hand! I am very loyal and will lay at the feet of those I care about when not being held. I do love to play with the other dogs in the house but I prefer the other doxie. I am fully house trained and have not had any accidents in my foster home. I love children, even my foster parent’s three year old granddaughter!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
