BEING FOSTER IN Greenville, SC.....
Hi There! My name is Tilly and my foster mom told me that I should say a little bit about myself so that I can find my forever family! First of all, I am told that I am 7 years old but I love beating my 2 year old foster brother in races in the backyard. I also think I am better at tug of war than him but don’t tell him I said that! But he likes to play ALL the time and I would much rather come in and snuggle with my foster mom and get my belly rubbed when I’ve gotten my exercise. I came to be with my foster mom because somehow I got away from my first family (my foster mom isn’t sure if I was lost or abandoned but no one ever called to claim me) and I was so sad and scared. It was freezing outside so I knew I had to find some place warm. I finally found a gas station with some boxes that I could stay in. The people also fed me some scraps (which is why my foster mom says she is making me exercise). Finally, some place called animal control came, picked me up and called my foster mom to bring me to her house. Oh boy do I love it here!! My foster mom and dad say that I am a very polite girl and that my tail never stops wagging. I also get along with my fur brothers just fine but I also wouldn’t mind getting all the lovings to myself! Not sure about those cats tho since I have never been around one. One of my favorite parts of the night is right before my foster mom gets into the big bed….she points to my bed and I go and lay in it. THEN…she covers me in a nice warm blanket, kisses my head, and tells me that I will never have to be scared and alone ever again. That makes me so happy.
Tilly does great with meeting new people. She goes up to greet everyone and isn't skittish when they try to pet her as long as she is introduced properly. In fact she LOVES the extra attention. I do think that she would do well with kids over the age of 10 and know how to properly handle a small dog. Since tilly likes the quiet evenings and appreciates her own space (i.e. her bed, her kennel, her bowl of food), Tilly may not be the best choice for families with very young children.
Well thank you very much for reading my story and hopefully I get to have my very own family soon!
Just to add a little bit to Tilly’s story, she really is such a polite girl. She has been here for 2 weeks now and I have yet to hear her bark. She gets along just fine with my 2 dachshunds and 40 pound sheltie. When she first came to stay here, she showed a little bit of food aggression by letting out a low growl when the dogs came near her. I think that was just because everything was so new…now the dogs walk all around her when she is eating, and she couldn’t care less. She also hasn’t had one potty accident either…not even on her first night here! She hasn’t asked to go out yet but I keep her on a regular potty routine and she gets pretty antsy when she has to go. I can honestly say she is one of the most sweet spirited fosters I have ever had. She still has the puppy play in her and loves to run but she has all the good qualities of an older dog also. When you pet her, she starts making this cute little sound that says how happy she is! It’s like she has seen how scary it can be so she is so grateful to be with a family. I put her in a crate while we are at work but so far she has been fine when left out of the crate when we are gone for short periods of time. She also seems to be fine on a leash but I think a harness would help as she sometimes tugs.
When she first came in from the shelter, she was quite overweight (21 pounds when she should be about 17-18 lbs) and some hair loss on her back end due to a flea allergy (although no fleas were actually found on her). She LOVES to run and play when in the backyard (as long as she gets her naps in the sun afterwards!) so she has already lost about a pound and looks much better. She has also been on medication and vitamins for the allergy and her hair is starting to grow in nice and thick. I will give another report in a few weeks to see how well she is progressing. Her teeth are in great condition. Whoever had her before took good care of her. She will get a dental before she goes to her forever family. In some of the pictures, you can see Tilly has a little cherry eye; however, that will also be fixed prior to adoption.
Tilly is listed as special needs because on our last vet visit, the vet found a small heart murmur. She said that as long as Tilly is on the right kind of diet and exercises regularly, this shouldn’t affect her health at all. It isn’t even enough to prevent her from getting a dental. For all that Tilly has been through, the vet said that she is very surprised to see that she is so healthy and full of personality.
If you are looking for a loving and loyal girl that is full of personality without the work of training a puppy. Tilly is the girl for you. She is so happy to be doing anything as long as she is with her person…whether it be snuggling on a lap while watching tv, playing with her favorite ball, or laying here at the foot of my chair while I type this. She has a big heart and is just waiting to share it with the right family…could you be the family to show her what a doxie’s life should be?
Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.
More about TILLY..FL
Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
