BIO (update 10/20/2017): Edward can be the sweetest boy. He loves attention, treats, and playing with toys. He’s very smart, and seems to understand everything you say, whether it’s praising or chastising him. He gets along well with his foster sisters, but is standoffish with strangers. He would not be reliable with children. Edward startles very easily, which may be due to his limited vision.
Edward has a tendency to attach to one person and become that person’s “protector”. For that reason we need to make sure he goes to a dachshund savvy home that will continue with his training that we have been taught for him to not take over the home. He needs a strong pack leader and for the other to understand that he will favor one person over the other. We place his doggie bed near the sofa when we gather to watch tv, and he snuggles there instead of being allowed in a lap. He gets pets, belly rubs, and attention in his bed. This, and a stern “NO” has made a big difference in his guarding behavior.
BIO (update 7/2/2017): Edward has settled in to his new foster home like a champ! He is getting along well with his four foster sisters, even the grumpy one, and loves his new foster people. He sleeps in his doggie bed beside the big bed, and waits to be covered up every night at bedtime. Edward would make a great pet for someone who is home a lot and likes a snuggle bug!
BIO: Edward came from a home in NY where the owner surrendered him because she got a large breed puppy. Edward didn’t care for the puppy or the cats that she had, so she kept him in a muzzle 8-10 hours a day while at work. Dogs should never have to live wearing a muzzle, it is not healthy for them.
With that being said, it has caused Edward to have some quirks. When he arrived, we took him straight to our trainer to have him assessed due to his quirks. We quickly learned if given a strong “no”, Edward will ignore the cats – no need for a muzzle (we would still not recommend him in a home with cats). While in training, Edward learned how to walk on a leash like a champion, sit, stay, place command, as well as daily walks on a treadmill (that’s right, he loves walking on the treadmill!!!). Edward needs a forever home that will commit to daily walks with him. He loves them and it releases any pent-up energy he has.
Edward is house-broken to a doggie door and crate-trained (however, in his foster home he is fine with free roam of the house). He loves his doggie bed so if you have several throughout your house he would be in doggie heaven.
Sadly, Edward’s right eye had to be removed due to severe dry eye, but you would never know it. Because the dry eye was so bad, he never had good vision out of that eye. We decided it was best to remove it so he wasn’t always looking “through a dirty windshield”.
Because he ruled the roost for so long at his previous home, we feel a Dachshund savvy home that will not let him become leader of the pack would be the best fit. If you “baby” Edward he may revert back to old habits, and you wouldn’t like that Edward very much.
Won’t you please give this boy the forever home he deserves? He is really a fantastic little man and oh so beautiful (his pictures do not do him justice!).
