If I could choose 2 works to describe Benjamin, they would be sweet and snugglebug! Benjamin was wandering along a back road when a shelter picked him up. Although we don't know for sure his background, he is very easy going and I can tell someone spent time on training him. I don't think Ben has one mean bone in his body! As long as he gets plenty of lovings and belly rubs, he is a happy boy! He has shown some mild dominant characteristics; however, a firm NO works just fine. I have not been able to test him around children; however, whenever we go out, all kinds of people want to come up and pet him and he is just all about the attention. I do think children under the age of 8 would not be good for Ben as he gets very frightened at quick or sudden movements as well as when there is a lot of commotion. He shows no food or toy aggression with me or other dogs. I have gone up to him while he is eating and gently tugged on his ears and touched his tail and he just kept on eating! He has not had one potty accident in my house yet except one time he started to lift his leg to mark a chair. I caught him just in time and said "NO!" and he has not tried that since. I keep him on a pretty strict potty routine so I think that helps. I have seen him go to the door once to ask out on his own, but he didn't scratch or anything so it could be easily missed if you are not watching. I believe that Benjamin would be perfect as an only dog as he LOVES getting all the attention and gets a bit jealous and whiney when he has to share. However, if you are not home during the day, another dog to keep him company would be perfect. He gets along with my dogs just fine and is even starting to join in the game of "tag" in the backyard. He walks well on a leash and is very alert to what you are doing or saying. He does well in a crate or gated area as long as he has some toys to keep him occupied. Benjamin still has a lot of puppy in him and is very well behaved once he gets used to your routine...not to mention he is so handsome! His favorite thing to do when he isnt on your lap or laying on your feet is to roll on his back all around the carpet to get a good scratch! He will truly make such a special addition to any family. Can you give Benjamin the forever home that he is looking for?

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
