UPDATE: ( 6/2/14 )  I am very proud to announce that I have gotten much better being around people.  On Memorial Day, we had a lot of visitors at the house that I have never met before and was very social with them.  I wasn’t nervous and played with them and they played with me too.  It was very nice to meet people that treat me well.  I also had no problem with a few younger kids that were here too.  My foster dad says that I am doing so well.   I just got done spending the past few weeks with a two female West Highland White Terriers (Westies) that my foster parents were “babysitting” for one of their friends.  We got along very well.  NOTE FROM FOSTER DAD:  He is such a wonderful puppy!  He really has come out of his shell and is developing his social personality really well.  When we first got him, I don’t think he understood playing and has really begun having fun.  We are working on playing with a tennis ball so hopefully he learns toss and fetch fairly quick.  Mason handled our Memorial Day gathering extremely well.  There were children ranging from 5 to 10 here, and he socialized with them very well.  Mason would make any family a great companion.  He is still a bit skittish around men, but most specifically when they are standing.  When sitting on a couch or lying in bed, he is quick to curl up and sleep next to them.  He listens extremely well.  A huge heart with a ton of love for such a small little dog.

_____________

Hello everyone, my name is Mason.  I came to live with my foster family a week ago.  I have had a tough life up to now, but my foster parents have made me so welcome here in their home.  I tend to be very skittish and nervous around everyone but do tend to get excited and jump around and play.  I love to snuggle with them on the couch and in bed during sleep-time.  I really enjoy going on walks (though sometimes am a little bit of a challenge to get my harness put on me).  When we go for walks, I walk right next to you and don’t pull at my leash at all.  Unfortunately I have to admit, I do have this one “bad-boy” tendency (at least that’s what my foster parents say when I do it).  I do tend to mark in the house at times.  My foster dad says I’m getting better, but he has to remind me not to do it as I start sniffing around.  Over the past two days, I’ve only done it once and think I’m getting better.  Dad says I’ve been a good boy this weekend.  I haven’t had any pooping accidents in the house since I’ve been here.  They both work during the week, so I am inside most of the day and I am very good at holding it.  I love my food and am doing a great job at eating it all and am putting on some weight so as to not be so boney (I was pretty skinny when I got here).  I eat one tablespoon of canned food mixed with about ¾ cup of dry food once for breakfast and once for dinner.  I would prefer to go to a home without children as I prefer being around adults and because I am so nervous around people, I think that I would be better suited in an adult family setting.  I really look forward to finding the perfect “fur-ever” home!  I will work very hard to be the perfect companion for you and share all my love with you!

More about Mason....TN

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
